Southern Utah: The Gorgeous Hussies continue tour in Cedar City, St. George

The Gorgeous HussiesThe Gorgeous Hussies, a fun-filled Salt Lake City-based power pop band with more than a modicum of jazz and funk influence, will be performing in both St. George and Cedar City, Utah. Their live performances are a thing to behold, with performances sometimes including a fusion-esque performance of “Wanna Be,” the hit from England-based recording group The Spice Girls.

The band will be performing at the St. George Street Fair on Thursday, Oct. 23, at The Grind Coffee House in Cedar City on Friday, Aug.  29, and at the Brian Head Resort on Saturday, Aug. 30.

Check out The Gorgeous Hussies on their MySpace, or listen below to a new track from the group, “Pop Chanteuse” and an older track, “Dangerously Similar”. The band has also been the subject of a MusicGeek.org spotlight and an interview on this lovely site.

News Commentary: The Moldy Peaches allow song re-write for resort commercial

Though the ad was released a few months ago, I’ve just now seen it: The Moldy Peaches have, apparently, allowed a re-write of their strangely popular and irreverent “Anyone Else But You” to appear in a commercial for a Bahama Resort: Atlantis. This, on its own, is odd. What’s even odder is looking up from my desk at the CNN-tuned television in the newsroom and discovering that the song I recognized almost immediately wasn’t quite the song I expected. No, it was a strange re-write, the lyrics to which I’ve now forgotten, and The Moldy Peaches… approved it?

The bigger question, I guess, is why the obnoxious indie kids were even considered in the first place. Sure, “Anyone Else But You” was a success after the release of Juno, but it isn’t exactly the most marketing-friendly piece of music they could have considered. Perhaps the marketing group should have considered listening to some of the band’s other tracks: “Steak For Chicken” would have elicited some interested responses, and “Who’s Got the Crack” likely would have scared them away entirely.

In any case, this certainly is … strange. Watch the ad at Rolling Stone.

Music Geek #10: Broken Social Scene in Salt Lake City

Matthew Montgomery wears funny glasses in a Cedar City, Utah park. Let’s get one thing straight. I love Broken Social Scene with a passion I reserve mostly for things other than music — you know, food, water, the like — and a chance to see them perform a mere four(!) hours away, in Salt Lake City, Utah was something I didn’t care to pass up. After learning of the concert via an IRC friend (I call this Music Geek for a reason, after all) I set out to find a way, rain or shine, money or, well, broke.

Read after the jump for video of Broken Social Scene at Lollapalooza 2008.

Review: Parenthetical Girls – Entanglements

Parenthetical Girls – “A Song For Ellie Greenwich” | download
[audio:http://www.musicgeek.org/wp/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/a-song-for-ellie-greenwich.mp3]

From the first seconds of Parenthetical Girls’ third release, it’s clear that Entanglements isn’t going to be one of those albums that starts with a track that doesn’t fit the rest of the record. The over-the-top, theatrical approach taken with “Four Words” marks the band’s theatrical approach as they provide an endearing twist on indie pop. (more…)

Electronically oriented pop music hits all the right spots for some people: Salme Dahlstrom, for those people, can’t be hitting too far off those. The Acid Cowgirl Audio Trade is full of interesting synthetic textures and sounds, but at some points, it lacks a bit of that important impact.

Other times, though, Dahlstrom demonstrates a nice understanding with the pop music she’s writing, and it’s those points that really define the record. While this certainly won’t be named electronic album of the year, it does feature some engaging tracks. Where Dahlstrom really succeeds is not her writing, though: Her vocals are straight from the style’s top shelf, shifting with some abandon between a sassy, in-your-face attitude and nicely harmonized standard modern pop.

Sure, The Acid Cowgirl Audio Trade isn’t the best album of the year, but Dahlstrom’s vocals will be enough for some to keep listening, and the writing, while fairly typical of pop-centric electronica, isn’t bad enough to drive away listeners.

“Fashionable People,” named for the falsetto-inflected chorus line from this song, a track from 2007’s Ashtray Rock, is an entertaining romp in power pop that experiments with a variety of instrumentation styles to reach its easily listenable destination. Top it off with an entertaining video (embedded after the jump,) and you’ve got a song that sounds almost Weezerish (if I can coin a term, like all good music journalists) in its methods; however, there’s an unrestrained feel here that would place it above most recent efforts from the band Joel Plaskett undoubtedly drew some influence from.

Video: Noah and the Whale – “5 Years Time”

Noah and the WhaleNoah and the Whale, a nice little indie pop group from London, are releasing their latest, Peaceful, the World Lays Me Down, on Cherry Tree Records on September 16th; to promote it, they’ve released a video for “5 Years Time,” which I’ve embedded below. The track’s cute, happy, the works — in it’s own way, it fields a certain twee feel. I’m not complaining. Watch the video after the jump, or watch it on imeem.

Sub Pop hits 20, shares anniversary with Microsoft’s Zune

So, Sub Pop, the infamous record label from Seattle, has hit 20 years old; to celebrate, they’ve released a number of exclusive items to the Zune Marketplace. Now, I don’t necessarily endorse the Zune (nor do I necessarily endorse the iPod,) but the content’s worth checking out if you’ve already got one of those neat devices. Plus, you can get $2 off each album from Sub Pop (for a limited time, of course) — so if you’ve been waiting to grab the latest from The Jesus and Mary Chain, wait no longer. Check out the video after the jump for a nice look at Sub Pop at 20. (more…)
