Minus the Bear, widely loved within the indie rock community, announced today the May 4 release of Omni, their fourth full-length album. Produced by Joe Chiccarelli, who has worked with artists as diverse as My Morning Jacket, Frank Zappa, Oingo Boingo, and Counting Crows, and is the man said to have found Tori Amos, Omni promises new ground from Minus the Bear.

Omni is set to be the band’s first release on Dangerbird Records, whose roster includes Silversun Pickups, The One AM Radio, and The Dears. Shortly after the release, the group will set out on a six-week tour of North America.

NEWS: Cedar City songwriter compilation, Cedar Breaks Out!, hits shelves after release party

Cedar Breaks Out!

Saturday saw the release of the latest project from the home of independent music in Cedar City, Groovacious Records. Cedar Breaks Out!, a 14-track compilation consisting of some of the town’s best singer-songwriters, made its debut last night at the record store, which was nearly bursting at the seams with attention.

The compilation features 14 artists from the Cedar City area, and 11 of those performed at Saturday evening’s celebrations. It serves as a refreshing reminder that not only are Open Mic nights at Groovacious packing a punch with their unique performances and evocative covers, but these musicians can provoke an emotional response with their own music.

The album sees a street release date of Tuesday, when it can be purchased for $9.99 at Groovacious Records. The album is being released on Groovacious Platters, the record label run by Groovacious Records owners Tim and Lisa Cretsinger.

Brief: Broken Social Scene debut track from upcoming release, Forgiveness Rock Record

Forgiveness Rock Record

“World Sick,” the first track from Broken Social Scene’s forthcoming Forgiveness Rock Record, hit today with the usual aplomb of a track from the Canadian indie rock supergroup. The influence of producer John McEntire — you know, the post-rock god — shines through in the nearly-seven-minute opus.

While “World Sick” doesn’t exhibit all of the pop sensibilities Broken Social Scene has come to be known for, it does show the group’s penchant for that elusive expansive sound: It is in this that the track holds the most glimmer, and you can imagine that McEntire was either chosen distinctly for this purpose, or he has imparted some of his years of wisdom on the group in their songwriting.

Music Geek: Woody Allen’s Manhattan and Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” combine for engaging musical perspective

That famed, prolific director Woody Allen — the auteur behind greats like Annie HallInteriors, and, of course, the subject at hand, 1979’s Manhattan, the three of which were released over a three-year period from 1977 to 1979 — has always displayed a penchant for musical ingenuity.

So when the black-and-white, self-affirming Manhattan opens with George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” a musical masterpiece said by some to be a portrait or tribute to New York City, we aren’t really surprised. When Allen, with his wry wit and self-deprecating demeanor, juxtapositions his opening narration, a stop-start, neurotic monologue serving as the opening to the equally neurotic Isaac Davis, even obliquely mentioning Gershwin, we’re given a distinct image of the film to come.

Neva Dinova, Bright Eyes split prepped for reissue

One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels

In 2004, Neva Dinova and Bright Eyes released a collaborative EP, One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels, on Crank! Records to some genuine acclaim. Six years on, the split’s garnering some newly focused attention as it’s prepped for a reissue on Omaha, Neb., label Saddle Creek Records, which found its notoriety coming in the form of being home to early-2000s indie standbys like Cursive, Bright Eyes, and The Faint.

The reissue of One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels hits shelves on March 23 from Saddle Creek Records and includes four tracks not featured on the original release. Pre-orders will be shipping two weeks before the street date and can be purchased directly from Saddle Creek.

PLAYLIST: Having trouble waking up? Try our energetic playlist!

Do you have trouble waking up? I do. Of the many strategies I’ve tried for waking up at a proper time — some more successful than others — one of the most successful, aside from having cold water unexpectedly sprayed on me, has been finding a few catchy, exciting pop songs to jolt me into normal life. In no particular order, here are seven of my favorite songs that help speed my waking process.

Radiohead – “No Surprises”
A veritable classic of our time, “No Surprises” floats you into a waking state with a staccato bell-like guitar introduction. There’s a reason it’s one of the most recognizable introductions in modern rock music, and when I’m waking up, I always find it important to listen to something at least vaguely recognizable. I hate being startled into my day.

Arcade Fire – “Wake Up”
Is this one too oblique? Maybe, but it’s still a damn good song to hear as you drift back into consciousness. There’s something about the driving guitar, the faux-choral arrangement, that blanket of warm distortion. Give this a whirl in your wake-up routine, and I’m sure you’ll notice a certain hopefulness pervade through your day.

King may be dubbed a singer-songwriter, but it’s her guitar work that thrills and excites the imagination.
