Spotlight: Dawn Landes | Female folk artist to embark on month-long tour

Dawn Landes / Courtesy of Sneak Attack MediaDawn Landes, a Louisville, Kentucky native, performs a certain seductive bluegrass-inflected folk-indie style. Her second album, Fireproof, is set to be released on March 4 via Cooking Vinyl. Landes will be embarking on a month-long tour of the eastern United States starting Feb. 6. Dates are posted after the jump.

“Bodyguard,” posted below, is a nice introduction to the style being exercised by Landes; holding up against the influx of female indie artists doesn’t seem something this musician will find much trouble with.

Spotlight: Reed KD

Reed KD / Courtesy of Fanatic PromotionReed KD, a northern California-based act with a refreshing indie-centric folk-bluegrass-pop style and a penchant for vocals that sound at least a smidgen influenced by Elliott Smith, are set to release The Ashes Bloom on Feb. 12. The album will be released on Dirty Laundry Records. The two tracks posted below, “Empty Bottles” and “Even If I,” are well-written, well-timed pop songs, and they’re certainly worth an attentive listen.

Spotlight: The Billie Burke Estate

The Bille Burke EstateThe Billie Burke Estate, who just released Let Your Heart Break, offer a strangely enticing combination of 1970s progressive rock, two-tone ska, and pop sensibilities that make themselves evidenced in “I Can Float” and “Everybody’s Gonna Die,” posted below for download and listening. The former exhibits a wealth of influence from across a wide musical spectrum, while the latter is a more straightforward piano-based pop song with a sardonic lyrical approach. Andy Liotta, mastermind of the Seattle-based The Billie Burke Estate, works vocals in forgotten ways, while instrumentation is effective but not over the top.

Who are the main influences on your music?:
Well, honestly, just life and love — the people that bring about the sheer joy and accentuate the beauty in all of my surroundings. My musical influences vary and flux quite a bit and often, but I’ve always been a fan of Third Eye Blind, Goo Goo Dolls, Maria Taylor, Bright Eyes, Stars, Jimmy Eat World, etc. I could go on for a while, so I’ll spare you, but a lot of it has to do with what a band or song reminds me of. I embed memories within each song I listen to. Just about anything could influence me.

Spotlight: Say Hi

Say Hi To Your MomSay Hi (previously Say Hi To Your Mom,) a newly Seattle-based (they previously called home Brooklyn, N.Y.,) indie outfit, plays a catchy-but-not-too-upbeat style inflected with a bit of synthesizer and flare (two things that, for some reason, tend to be associated with each other, for better or worse.) Their upcoming album, The Wishes and The Glitch, is due to be released on Feb. 5 on Euphobia Records. The Wishes and The Glitch, the fifth from the indie pop-rock band, features contributions from both David Bazan, best known for Pedro the Lion and Headphones, but also notable for his solo work, and John Roderick, head of Barsuk-released fellow Seattle indie-popsters, The Long Winters.

Spotlight: Kaki King

Kaki KingKaki King, upon my first listen, is nothing too experimental. I can appreciate this, else nearly all music would be dull and pointless. No, King, who has worked with Tegan & Sara and Foo Fighters, is nice and relaxing and certainly worth a listen. When her album, Dreaming of Revenge, launches in March, it’s bound to be something interesting.
