News: Broken Bells, incoming indie rock darling the result of James Mercer, Danger Mouse collaboration

James Mercer, lead man for The Shins, and Danger Mouse have put together a soothing and funky collaboration: Broken Bells. “The High Road” is a tantalizing peek of what will likely be one of the better albums we see this year. The single, the first from the upcoming self-titled album, is the current iTunes Single of the Week.

Snippets of the entire album are available on the iTunes, along with the entire first track, “The High Road.” At this time, we can only speculate the possibility of a tour; if tour dates are set, we will promptly update that information here. For more on Broken Bells, visit brokenbells.com.

As a side note, James Mercer will also be appearing in filmmaker Matt McCormick’s film, Some Days are Better Than Others. The film will be screening at South by Southwest Film Festival, which will take place from March 12–20 in Austin, Texas. More information may be found at somedaysthemovie.com as well as sxsw.com/film. Specific screening dates have not yet been announced.

News: Broken Social Scene preps new release, tour

At last! A new Broken Social Scene release — and not from the Presents series — has been handed a release date: May 4. According to a press release, the Canadian supergroup has slimmed to six core members for the forthcoming effort, which is being produced by post-rock veteran John McEntire, perhaps most recognizable for his work in Tortoise. Just before the album hits shelves, BSS will be jumping on tour, starting in the states before jetting across the pond to Europe.

Monsters of Folk, with its obvious tribute to the festival Monsters of Rock, is threatening to create quite a stir in the music world. Having already announced the concept — the band is comprised of Bright Eyes alumni Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, and songwriter M. Ward — they’ve now confirmed their plans to release a debut album on September 22, 2009. The album will be released in the U.S. on Shangri-La Music and internationally on Rough Trade in the UK, Spunk Records in Australia and New Zealand, and P-Vine Records in Japan.

The album was produced by Mogis and features all four members of the band performing every instrument on the album.

News: Nada Surf’s Daniel Lorca injured, but show goes on

Daniel Lorca, left, will be unable to perform with Nada Surf for two weeks because of medical injury.Daniel Lorca, bassist for indie rockers Nada Surf, announced today via the band’s MySpace that he will be unable to perform with the band for two weeks following a knee injury, citing a risk of permanent injury. Nada Surf, he says, has only had to cancel two shows in over 14 years, so it is with some relief he announced Ozma’s Jose Galvez will be performing alongside the other two members. It does mean Lorca will miss the band’s performance at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colo. Listen below to a track from Nada Surf’s latest, Lucky. MusicGeek.org wishes Daniel a speedy recovery.

Southern Utah: The Gorgeous Hussies continue tour in Cedar City, St. George

The Gorgeous HussiesThe Gorgeous Hussies, a fun-filled Salt Lake City-based power pop band with more than a modicum of jazz and funk influence, will be performing in both St. George and Cedar City, Utah. Their live performances are a thing to behold, with performances sometimes including a fusion-esque performance of “Wanna Be,” the hit from England-based recording group The Spice Girls.

The band will be performing at the St. George Street Fair on Thursday, Oct. 23, at The Grind Coffee House in Cedar City on Friday, Aug.  29, and at the Brian Head Resort on Saturday, Aug. 30.

Check out The Gorgeous Hussies on their MySpace, or listen below to a new track from the group, “Pop Chanteuse” and an older track, “Dangerously Similar”. The band has also been the subject of a MusicGeek.org spotlight and an interview on this lovely site.

News Commentary: The Moldy Peaches allow song re-write for resort commercial

Though the ad was released a few months ago, I’ve just now seen it: The Moldy Peaches have, apparently, allowed a re-write of their strangely popular and irreverent “Anyone Else But You” to appear in a commercial for a Bahama Resort: Atlantis. This, on its own, is odd. What’s even odder is looking up from my desk at the CNN-tuned television in the newsroom and discovering that the song I recognized almost immediately wasn’t quite the song I expected. No, it was a strange re-write, the lyrics to which I’ve now forgotten, and The Moldy Peaches… approved it?

The bigger question, I guess, is why the obnoxious indie kids were even considered in the first place. Sure, “Anyone Else But You” was a success after the release of Juno, but it isn’t exactly the most marketing-friendly piece of music they could have considered. Perhaps the marketing group should have considered listening to some of the band’s other tracks: “Steak For Chicken” would have elicited some interested responses, and “Who’s Got the Crack” likely would have scared them away entirely.

In any case, this certainly is … strange. Watch the ad at Rolling Stone.

Sub Pop hits 20, shares anniversary with Microsoft’s Zune

So, Sub Pop, the infamous record label from Seattle, has hit 20 years old; to celebrate, they’ve released a number of exclusive items to the Zune Marketplace. Now, I don’t necessarily endorse the Zune (nor do I necessarily endorse the iPod,) but the content’s worth checking out if you’ve already got one of those neat devices. Plus, you can get $2 off each album from Sub Pop (for a limited time, of course) — so if you’ve been waiting to grab the latest from The Jesus and Mary Chain, wait no longer. Check out the video after the jump for a nice look at Sub Pop at 20. (more…)
