An interview with John DuCrest

·

When did you first start playing music?

I started playing music when I was 8 or 10. That?s right, band class baby, I rocked the violin.

What inspired you to take up the guitar?

My daddy. He was a great musician.

Do you really need a better guitar?

At the time I wrote (or should I say, as the song spontaneously manifested from pent up aggression and rage) I did, badly. The famed guitar is called ?The Ziv? it was my first. I bought it at a pawnshop for $100, and trust me, I got ripped off. I still have it, maybe Ill break it out at the Neverland show for old time sake.

What sort of song-writing process do you follow?

This is a difficult question, but I?ll try to explain it the best way I can. I think my song-writing process starts when there is something in my life that I cant explain, that my mind cant figure out, or I feel like something is off, whether it is a good, bad, or an empty feeling, I seem to be compelled to sit down and start writing. The hardest part for me is surrendering to what the world is trying to tell me, and not allowing the mind take over, allowing the muse speak through me. It usually takes me about 1 month until I am satisfied with what has developed, until I can do or explain no more. The guitar work happens in relative way, sometimes it?s a jam that I have been playing for a while, or it is woven from a couple of previous super sweet jam sessions Yo! Sometimes it?s made up there right on the spot but always, it must back, and make sense to the lyrics.

For what reason did you decide to start playing live?

My father just passed, and I came across some money. It was a very difficult time in my life. I just didn?t know what to do, So I took the money, paid off all my debts and bought a acoustic guitar amp, mic stand, seat, and figured what the hell, Lets get back in to the game baby! You were there the first night I started Matt.

What role have you played in the founding of the new venue in Southern Utah, Neverland?

Mainly support, and some legal and technical issues, ohh and being a front man and a super sweet entertainer!

Do you have any dreams, musically, or are you playing everything by ear, so to speak?

I wanna play the Conan O?Brian show and tour coast to coast playing colleges and make a million dollars and have people throw stuff on stage at me like roses and girls screaming ?John I love you, take me backstage, I want you to make me some babies, and we?ll call one of them Sebastian Bradley? and have a nice house with one of those beds with the silk stuff hanging from the banisters and a pool and a motorcycle.
