Redder Than Last Tuesday, the first full-length from Salt Lake City group Life By Accident, starts powerfully, but quickly digresses into some strange sort of attempt to sound harder than they really are. It's when the vocals kick in during the first track that this is first realized -- slightly scratchy and indubitably grungey, the first couple of tracks quickly become grating.
It's not to say that Life By Accident is untalented; rather, they have a rare sort of grasp of songwriting -- even if it is sullied by those insufferable monotonic ramblings. These three guys really seem to know each other very well, which is refreshing in this musical world where bands will form and release an album less than a year later (for better or worse).
All in all, Redder Than Last Tuesday is a difficult listen at best, despite its sonic variety. It certainly meshes well with itself, which is an important piece of the puzzle, but as a listener, it never really 'clicked.'
