Shapes and Sizes - Shapes and Sizes

2006, Asthmatic Kitty Records

Canadian-based Shapes and Sizes aren't afraid to paint on the canvas of sound with bold strokes, as they make evident in their self-titled debut release. Vibrant vocals, jangly guitars, and a clear sense of purpose combine for Shapes and Sizes; the resulting musical mesh is both catchy and poppy (two musical elements that are usually seen together, it seems) and ultimately conducive to an incredibly interesting set of tracks.

It's the unexpected instrumentation that helps to define this album; with saxaphones, trumpets, vibraphones, and violas, Shapes and Sizes offer up a rousing take on indie pop. The band is embodied by the vocals of Rory Seydel, which are often slightly downbeat -- but with a certain hopeful attitude that proves refreshing and allows for a much captivating listening experience.

Shapes and Sizes is an interesting record; defined by its variety and consistent pace, this band demonstrates a regard for their craft. With their engaging and unique stylings -- with their debut record, even -- Shapes and Sizes is a band that's determined not to disappoint.
