The Tasty Habits - This is Why We Can't Have Nice Things

·

2006

Here we have yet another guilty pleasure album of mine, except the two guys that make up the Tasty Habits (Deane Calcagni and Dan Doggett) are obviously trying to make a cheesy Reggie-and-the-Full-Effect-type album here on purpose. However, the main thing that makes these guys different from Reggie is the fact that they sound really unprofessional. Used within the two of them is a drum machine, a keyboard/synthesizer and an electric guitar, or at least it sounds like that?s all they use. Most of the songs sounded fairly ?indie-rockingly? good and just had stupid lyrics. Examples included ?Sleepover Tonight!? ?That Song We Ripped Off from the Cure? and ?Me, Deane and the Drum Machine.? However, there were some songs that were actually pretty good all-around. These songs included the 50s love-song throwback ?Summer Friend,? and the totally 80s-ish new-wave dance songs ?Robbie the Robot? and ?Catie?s Song.? Oh yeah, the silly-yet-somehow-emotional ?The Prom Song (do do do)? and the Postal Service-ish workout ?This is as Emo as I get? were commendable cheesy-ballad attempts. Although all the songs on this album were simple and created as a joke, they gave me that ?If-these-guys-can-make-an-album-I-can? feeling of inspiration, which is a hard feeling to give me after listening to an entire album. Plus, like many novelty albums, this one is great fun to listen to for a few chuckles here and there.
