2007, Self-released
The latest from indie folk musician Drew Danburry was recorded at two live performances in France, one at Buveur de Lune in Paris and the other at a home in Annecy. It's of note that the crowd is clearly audible — the recordings make it clear that Danburry is not in some shiny, polished studio, but instead playing for real, live people. You can hear the hand-claps, the laughing, the chatter between Drew and the audience; this is what makes it feel real. Listening really puts forth the feeling that Drew Danburry is no charlatan.
Drew Danburry's eclectic blend of folk and indie succeeds on many levels. Musically, it's enrapturing; the conglomeration of banjo, acoustic guitar, harmonica, and Danburry's passionate vocalizations melt together for a unique musical experience. Lyrically, Drew Danburry is a craftsman, telling stories of passion with his non-abrasive tone.
Having experienced Drew Danburry live is no prerequisite for an enjoyable listen to Live in France!, but it certainly doesn't hurt. This live album really captures the patented Drew Danburry live experience accurately, from his descriptions of The Neverending Story in “Artex Died In Truth or Consequences, NM” to his urging (but not rudely so) of audience members to take a free sticker.
Danburry's ability to capture an audience with his sweet brand of American folk music is made apparent on the album, from having the audience sing along on “I Am a Normal Healthy Person Which Means I Have Lots of Problems” to the shouting of “Bop!,” which he calls a part of “horse language.”
The second half of the album still captures the same feel as the first, though the quality of the recording is undoubtedly lesser. It doesn't affect the music, though, and that's why Drew Danburry can manage to create such beauty.
